It was built in the 900s, back when Guimaraes was under constant attack from both Moors and Norsemen. Although you can’t tell from my photo, the castle was undergoing extensive repairs at the time of my visit in August 2023. The castle was greatly strengthened during the 13th century, and these fortifications are what we see today.
